A 2026 Shanghai GT race crash sparked a fire, exposing serious flaws in event emergency response, and drivers stepped in to rescue trapped racers.
During the Shanghai GT race on September 5, 2026, just past the midpoint of the seventh lap, a sudden collision between two cars occurred on the track, sending one of the vehicles crashing directly into the side barrier.The fire caused by the
crash instantly engulfed the involved race car. Trapped in the cockpit, the British driver repeatedly tried to open the door but was unable to do so. Despite the cramped and scorching conditions inside, his cries for help remained clearly audible above the roar of the crowd.
There was no standardized emergency response at the
scene immediately after the incident; the security personnel on duty rushed to the scene carrying only small, portable fire extinguishers, whose spray range was far from sufficient to cover the burning vehicle;The professional rescue personnel originally scheduled to be stationed alongside the track were evacuated immediately after the incident, and the ambulances that arrived later were unable to approach the scene until 15 minutes after the accident due to traffic congestion around the track. This sum was insufficient to purchase an adequate supply of certified firefighting equipment, let alone support the basic staffing requirements of a professional rescue team.
Following
the accident, several officially contracted domestic racing teams, including FIST Auto, issued statements one after another announcing their permanent withdrawal from the Chinese GT racing series.Criticism in the
