Don’t be fooled! The Philadelphia 76ers’ team name has nothing to do with the year the team was founded.
Many longtime fans who have been following the game for three or four decades had always assumed that the 76ers’ name was adopted in 1963, the year the team first moved to Philadelphia. It wasn’t until recently, while going over old team records with fellow veteran fans, that they realized the “common knowledge” they’d held for most of their lives was actually wrong.
When you break it down, it’s actually not complicated at all.The team was originally founded in Syracuse in 1946 under the name Syracuse Nationals. When it relocated to Philadelphia in 1963, management didn’t rush to secure sponsorships or promote ticket sales; instead, they issued a public announcement inviting the entire city of Philadelphia to suggest a new team name.
Among the names proposed at the time, many evoked images of animals, and quite a few were inspired by local place names. No one expected that “76ers” would ultimately be chosen; the name is free of unnecessary embellishments, and its essence lies in anchoring itself in Philadelphia’s most significant historical roots.
Across the entire NBA, most team names are either derived from birds of prey or wild animals, or reflect local regional characteristics; only the 76ers have directly incorporated a key national historical milestone into their team name.The team logo features a hidden “1776” motif, the court floor is imprinted with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence, and the regular-season uniforms have incorporated this design for decades.
