Shi Shengjie, a beloved cross-talk master and Hou Baolin’s last disciple, dedicated his life to cross-talk development in Northeast China, passing away from liver cancer linked to long-term drinking in 2018.
When news broke in 2018 that Shi Shengjie had passed away from liver cancer, the entire crosstalk community was taken aback. He had just turned sixty-five, and had been performing on stage until recently, still able to project his voice and deliver punchlines with his signature vibrato. The news of his sudden passing was difficult for many who knew him to accept.
Shi Shengjie was born in 1953 in Tianjin into a family of crosstalk performers. At the age of seven, he was already performing on stage while standing on a stool. He later moved around the Northeast with his parents for more than a decade, during which time he honed his crosstalk skills to a very high level.In 1984, he became a disciple of Hou Baolin, serving as Hou’s final apprentice. The following year, he was named one of the nation’s “Top Ten Comedians,” and by then, his crosstalk routines had gained a massive following across the country.At the age of 39, having secured a job placement in Beijing and just as he was preparing to move there to further his career, he heard his master, Hou Baolin, urge him to stay in Northeast China to help foster the development of local crosstalk. Without a moment’s hesitation, he relinquished his spot in Beijing and put down roots in the region.He took on apprentices to pass down his craft, refined and polished his crosstalk pieces, and incorporated the region’s cheerful and open-hearted character into his creative work and performances. Throughout his life, he advocated for breaking down the old barriers between schools of crosstalk, hoping that the crosstalk community could unite and develop together.
The illness that ultimately claimed Shi Shengjie’s life was closely linked to his decades-long drinking habit.During his lifetime, Hou Baolin had repeatedly urged him to quit drinking, but he never took it seriously. Most people only saw him in top form on stage; few noticed how often he drank in his daily life, and no one ever linked this habit to serious health risks—until the news of his liver cancer diagnosis spread, and only then did people realize the gravity of the situation.
Chronic alcohol consumption, failure to follow medical advice, and neglect of daily health management—these lifestyle habits, common among ordinary people, can become life-threatening risks when they accumulate to a certain extent. Today, when people speak of this veteran of the crosstalk world, many recall the many regrets he left behind.
