Two years ago, Tomokazu Harimoto was still ranked behind Kiku Matsushima in Japanese table tennis; he was defeated multiple times by this younger rival at the All-Japan Championships. These achievements are not the result of a sudden burst of success. The Chinese men’s table tennis team has now failed to win the men’s singles title in four consecutive international tournaments.
