Why Has the Reception of Nolan's New Film, *Odyssey*, Been So Divided in China?

Nolan's The Odyssey, shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film, targets specific audiences, with polarized word-of-mouth and mixed market performance in China.

As a longtime movie fan with nearly twenty years of experience, I had barely been seated in the IMAX theater for two minutes whenthe big screen suddenly erupted with a grainy image, and a scene of atonement from Nolan’s new film *Odessey* burst directly into my field of vision. The film has just been released, and reviews have already shown a distinctly polarized response—a divide that goes far beyond the simple differences of opinion commonly found among ordinary moviegoers.

 Nolan's New Film, *Odyssey*

The entire film was shot on 70mm IMAX film and is adapted from a traditional Western religious theme of atonement that has been around for many years. From the very beginning, its creative focus was aimed squarely at a specific audience, making it difficult for the general public to find a point of emotional connection with the story. The film’s marketing and promotion campaign focused exclusively on IMAX theaters, repeatedly emphasizing the need to select the appropriate screening format—a strategy that completely failed to align with the everyday movie-going habits of the general public. Coupled with controversies surrounding the casting, this further dampened the willingness of non-core movie fans to see the film. The more fundamental issue lies in the fact that the values conveyed by the film diverge significantly from the standards of right and wrong widely accepted by the general public in China.

Come to think of it, the overall market environment for Hollywood films imported into mainland China has long since changed. Box office receipts for films that aren’t top-tier blockbusters have largely stabilized in the range of 200 million to 700 million, and their market share has been shrinking year by year.Nolan’s audience in mainland China has consistently been limited to a niche group of die-hard film fans in first- and second-tier cities. Over the years, his films have not seen any significant breakthroughs in terms of box office potential and have never truly broken out of that niche to gain widespread recognition among the general public.

Reactions in China to Nolan’s New Film, *Odyssey*

After the film’s release, the production company concentrated all its promotional resources on special-effects theaters, focusing on promoting specific screening versions, and the core fan base did indeed show a high level of support. The resulting market data was quite impressive: the opening weekend performance set a new record for Nolan’s films in mainland China, with projected box office revenue ranking third among his mainland releases. Cumulative box office revenue reached 470 million after two weeks in theaters, with a mere 5% of screenings accounting for 15% of total box office revenue, and the film’s Douban rating stabilized at 8.4.In contrast, however, attendance in standard theaters was dismal, significantly outperformed by other films released during the same period.

Impressive box office figures driven by a core fan base do not necessarily mean the film has gained widespread acceptance among the general audience. Viewing experiences often vary significantly across different audience demographics, so before choosing a movie, it’s a good idea to seek out honest feedback from seasoned film enthusiasts around you and select a film that aligns with your personal preferences.
