Retired Chinese volleyball star Yuan Xinyue, once an Olympic champion, quits pro sports at 30 and devotes to grassroots volleyball as a college teacher.
Has Yuan Xinyue Retired? The Life This Women’s Volleyball Team Captain Has Led Since Retiring Has Taken a Turn No One Expected
Yuan Xinyue, captain of the women’s volleyball team, who just turned 30 this year, has officially retired from professional competition and did not even participate in the 2026 professional player registration process.

Many longtime fans were quite surprised by this. In the decisive set of the China-Brazil match at the 2016 Rio Olympics,17-year-old Yuan Xinyue was brought in as a substitute by Coach Lang Ping. With a crucial block that directly thwarted the opponent’s attack, she helped the women’s volleyball team turn the tide and secure that pivotal victory—a moment that remains an indelible highlight in the memories of many to this day.As her career began to take off, the mobility limitations stemming from her height advantage once made her the subject of much public debate. Errors on receiving serves and a lack of timing on blocks often drew skepticism from outsiders, yet few noticed the defensive pressure she bore as the last line of defense at the net.During those years, she trained year-round while dealing with chronic lower back and knee injuries. Often, long after her teammates had left the gym, she would review game footage frame by frame, meticulously analyzing her movements and repeatedly practicing compensatory techniques—gradually addressing the technical shortcomings that had once been criticized.
Her perseverance ultimately paid off: at the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League, Yuan Xinyue ranked seventh in blocking points. At a time when many players who rose to fame at a young age have chosen to retire from professional competition early, she relied on her tenacity to weather the low points of her career.By the winter of 2025, the old injury that had plagued Yuan Xinyue for more than a decade had finally become too much to bear, and she personally confirmed to those close to her that she would no longer take the court as a professional player.By all accounts, with numerous honors—including an Olympic gold medal—under her belt, taking on a few commercial endorsements and living a leisurely life would have been the natural choice.
But Yuan Xinyue did not take that path. In early spring 2026, she did not take on any commercial endorsements, nor did she choose to step back from the spotlight to rest; instead, she quietly joined the Department of Physical Education at Nankai University, becoming an ordinary college physical education instructor.

This job is far from as easy as people might imagine. In her volleyball classes, Yuan Xinyue personally demonstrates how to set the ball for her students; her attendance standards are stricter than those of many veteran teachers; and during breaks, she often talks with her students about her training and competition experiences with the national team, explaining the origins of the “spirit of the women’s volleyball team.”This past May, she traveled with her team to Hong Kong to participate in a sports exchange event, and in June, she made a special trip to a rural middle school in Gansu to participate in a teaching support program. Whenever she has free time, Yuan Xinyue spends it on youth volleyball courts, observing the physical abilities of young players and keeping an eye out for promising prospects, fearing a shortage of future talent in the sport.
Many people say that Yuan Xinyue lacks flexibility—that instead of pursuing an easy source of income, she insists on doing these mentally and physically taxing tasks. But over the years, the public has seen far too many athletes who, after achieving success, gradually stray from their original aspirations; it’s truly rare to find someone like her who remains dedicated and grounded in grassroots sports.

In reality, there’s never been such a thing as a “natural-born champion.” Yuan Xinyue simply set her mind on something and was willing to devote herself to it wholeheartedly. When she could no longer compete on the field, she simply moved on to another setting to continue doing what she loved. Retirement has never been the end of her career—it’s merely a change of path, allowing her to continue pursuing her passion.
In life, as long as you stay focused on your goals and don’t give up easily, you can put down roots anywhere and live life on your own terms. If you happen to pass by the youth sports field near your home one day and see children practicing volleyball, why not stop for a moment to give them a round of applause and offer some encouragement to these young people who are carrying on the tradition?
