Hao Shuai, a Chinese table tennis player, had early success but a 2009 setback sidelined him from core squads. He stayed committed for 21 years, retired in 2024, and returned for the 2025 National Games.
At the 2009 World Team Table Tennis Championships, Hao Shuai held a three-game lead and was on the verge of securing victory for his team, but unexpectedly, his opponent staged a dramatic comeback. The moment the ball clattered onto his own table, the expressions of the Chinese national table tennis coaching staff on the sidelines darkened instantly. No one could have anticipated that this single ball that hit the table would become a turning point in his table tennis career.

Hao Shuai in His Early Days: He Was Actually Such a Force to Be Reckoned With
Hao Shuai’s competitive form in his early years was indeed outstanding. In 2003, when he was in his early twenties, he became the Tianjin team’s primary sparring partner, and his ability to mimic the playing styles of top players from around the world was unmatched on the team. His win rate in team training consistently stood at 62 percent, and in official matches, he had defeated renowned players such as Ma Long and Wang Hao. In 2008, he was ranked third in the world in men’s doubles, won the men’s singles titles at both the China Open and the Croatia Open, and helped his team secure the World Cup team gold medal. In the 2010 qualifying tournament for the World Table Tennis Championships, he narrowly missed out on a spot at the event by a very small margin.
One Setback That Changed the Course of a Whole Life
However, these impressive past achievements ultimately couldn’t make up for a single poor performance in a crucial match. After that match, the coaching staff began to question his ability to handle pressure, and after missing out on a spot in the Olympic singles competition, he never again secured a core spot on the main roster.

Anyone else would have left by now, but he just wouldn’t budge.
If any other athlete were in this situation, they would most likely request a transfer to another team in search of a way forward, or inevitably harbor resentment. Hao Shuai, however, neither threw a tantrum nor left the national team; he remained steadfast at the table tennis table.
Still able to beat active starters in his 40s—not many people have that kind of drive.
At the age of 37, he went to play in the Japanese league, where he continued to play with the same boldness and tenacity; at 41, while leading training for the Tianjin team, he took the court against the team’s young active starters and still managed to secure a victory. He continued this career as a sparring partner for 21 years, finally retiring officially in 2024 to take on the role of coach for the Tianjin team.

The 2025 National Games: He Was Back on the Field
At the 2025 National Games, many spectators once again saw Hao Shuai on the court. Working in perfect harmony with his partner, he swept their opponents 3–0 to advance smoothly to the next round. When asked by reporters, he simply replied calmly that he was still working hard and would not give up easily.
Holding a Strong Hand but Failing to Become the Team’s Core: Was This Commitment Worth It?

Though he never became a star in the spotlight, he has taken every step with solid determination.Faced with the same starting point, most people would likely have turned in a different direction after encountering a single setback. Yet Hao Shuai’s perseverance—which he has upheld for half his life—has ultimately become his own most solid foundation.
